Projects with Eternal Purpose

As we are driven by the compassion of Christ, we have seen more ways that we can improve the standard of living for these people by providing more service opportunities. Though we are meeting their physical needs, we want to meet their spiritual needs as well by introducing them to the Lord Jesus Christ. Each project enables us to have additional outreach with not only the orphans but also their entire village. As you review this project list, we ask that you prayerfully consider how you can help meet one or more of these needs that will literally change someone’s life.

“But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him.” I John 3:17 (NKJV)

Adopt a Sunday School —

Adopt a Sunday School —$79 a month or $948 for one year— Perpetual — One time gift of $12,000

Many of the orphans and villagers surrounding our Rescue Units live in rural bush settings where there are no churches or spiritual training available.  The roads and pathways are not accessible by most vehicles.  The only way to reach them is by walking, which can take days, or to navigate the pathways by motorcycle. The Rescue Units will serve as base camps and following in the style of the old-fashioned “circuit riders”, workers will travel to various locations to conduct Sunday schools.  By adopting a Sunday School you will enable children the opportunity to learn the life lessons of the Bible and know more of God’s love.

BoreHole

Bore Hole Well—$6600

In areas where a hand-dug well or coffer dam is not sufficient, it may be necessary to drill a deep well.  Although this is an expensive operation it does insure that the water source will be good and keep people from the contamination that can cause sickness and death.

Hand-dug Well with Pump—$575

In many areas you do not have to dig far to reach the water table. In these locations, generally near a creek or river, a hand-dug well is practical and can be built for a fraction of the cost of a drilled well.  The only additional need is a coffer dam to keep the sides from falling in during the digging, so that the well can be walled up with brick or blocks.

cofferdam

Coffer Dam to dig wells—$4400

The steel coffer dam is pulled out by a tripod as the blocks are laid and can be used over and over again.  This replaces an open pit where animals and humans get water from the same source.

ToiletBlock

5. Village Outhouse—$800

Cholera is a deadly killer and often is spread by people going to the bathroom on the ground.  A village outhouse can make the difference between life and death for orphans and others in a rural area. The year before a small village built one of these outhouses, 23 people died of cholera.

Drip Irrigation Pipes—$600

In Africa the seasons are defined by wet season (with rains) and dry season (without rains).  Crops can be grown during wet season but nothing grows during dry season. With a drip irrigation system a small garden can be grown during the dry season using 5-gallon buckets and SOAK AWAY tubing.  The buckets are carried by hand from a nearby water source.

Soccer Nets, Posts and Marked Boundaries—$210

SoccerNet

AIDS orphans have little opportunity to do anything fun because they cannot afford many luxuries—and a real soccer ball is a luxury. Soccer (a popular sport) can be a source of great joy and is affordable. A primitive soccer field built by the national staff at an AIDS Orphan Rescue Unit can be an unlimited source of recreation and laughter.

8. Motorcycle Sunday School Pavilion—$3000

At each Sunday school location we would like to build a simple 20’ by 40’ pole shelter with a tin roof and cement floor.   The sun is intense in the dry season and the rains heavy in the wet season, so the shelter is a blessing during both seasons.

Granary

Granary—$330

The placement of granaries at the Units has literally saved lives during times of famine.  These 6’ in diameter by 6’ high block granaries store maize (the staple food of African diets).  These granaries keep the maize from becoming invested with weevils and provide a place to store the maize in the dry season when the cost of it can increase 300-500%.

Volleyball

Volleyball Court, Nets and Balls—$180

Volleyball is also a sport that attracts scores of children especially the girls.  The court is leveled and boundaries marked with bricks.  Two painted posts are set to hold the nets, which are anchored with turnbuckles to keep it tight.  This will be placed near the Unit so that the facilitators can store the balls and also share Bible stories with the children that come to play.

Individual orphan goat project including: 2 goats and a shed—$200

Goats eat anything and can be used as food, a source of revenue for other needs or supply nutritious milk.  It is an orphan’s dream to have his own goats.

fruittree

Fruit Trees for Village or Unit—$500

This project would place 50 trees either at a Unit or in a nearby village to supply food to the area for years to come.  Fruit is something that many seldom can afford to purchase but would give added nutrition to their diets.

08malawibc_25

Nutritional Seminars at Units—$1500

This would provide 500 children for three months with a protein rich diet made of soybeans, peanuts and other protein ingredients.  Many of the orphans are malnourished and our Unit facilitators run seminars on how to make a protein-rich porridge that will increase their overall health.  This is the most requested need of our Unit facilitators because they face these starving children daily.

SolarPanel

Solar Panel Light System—$330

There is no electricity at any of the Rescue Units.  A solar panel will provide light every night at no extra burden on the finances for the Unit.  It really makes a difference as many times people come to them at night for help, and to be in total darkness makes it difficult to take care of the problem.

Fish Pond—$600

There are some places where sufficient water for a fishpond is available.  The hand-dug pond can supply fish, which is a good source of protein.

Rooster

Chickens—$110

At each Unit we try to raise chickens for both the facilitators and children as a source of protein.

books

Rescue Unit Libraries—$300

At the remote Unit locations there are no books available, even for the schools.  We are putting together small libraries of 50 books each, which the orphans may check out to help them practice their reading skills.  Each library consists of a variety of children’s classics, missionary biographies and Bible stories.  The children treasure these books and they bring hours of enjoyment to their lives.

Bicycle—$100

The majority of the Units are placed in such remote areas that bicycles are the only possible mode of transport. Bicycles would be such a blessing to the orphans so that they can go out and do evangelism.

maizemill

Maize Mill—$7000

People in remote areas have a difficult time getting their maize to a mill to grind it into the flour they use for their staple foods.  Maize mills run with diesel engines make an incredible difference to so many.

Sacks of Maize—$10 a sack

Our bases store sacks of maize to give to starving people during the famine season.  This is a tremendous testimony of serving that has made a spiritual impact as well as saved many lives.

Goats

Bibles—$12 each

As we begin our new Motorcycle Sunday School ministry we would love to purchase Bibles in the national languages for the children to use.  Most of us have multiple Bibles on our shelves and these precious children would love to just have the opportunity to use one each week at Sunday School.

Nets

Mosquito Nets—$10 each

Malaria is a deadly killer in Africa and the use of mosquito nets at the Matron’s Dorms and our BMW schools makes a big difference in the health of our people.

Blanket

Blankets—$12 each

Many of the orphans are too poor to own a blanket and suffer from the cold.  This is a wonderful opportunity to share something practical that can make a difference.

Pig

Solar Lanterns—$25 each

There is no electricity at any of the Rescue Units.  A solar lantern will provide light every night at no extra burden on the finances for the Unit.  It really makes a difference as many times people come to them at night for help, and to be in total darkness makes it difficult to take care of the problem.

CowQuiz Seats—$200

Part of the fun and excitement of attending one of the Sunday schools on the Motorcycle Sunday School Missions Circuits is to learn how to be a Bible quizzer.  The champion from each Sunday school wins a free trip to an Overseas Boot Camp in their country.

Benches and Tables —$1200

Sponsoring this project will enable us to build the necessary benches and tables for those attending Sunday School.  Not only do those attending need a place to sit to hear the stories of Jesus but they also need a place to color.  To be given the opportunity to have your own page of a Bible story to color is so rare and a real treat for these children.

Bales of Clothes—$100

We are able to purchase large bales of clothes in Africa that can be given out to the orphans.  These bales come in containers from different relief organizations and are in good condition.

Helmets and Rain Gear—$225

The Motorcycle Sunday School Circuit Riders need sturdy well made helmets to protect them and also rain gear for the rainy season.  Overseas items are not made as well as they are here.
